Unless you aspire to be a runway model, being skinny can be off-putting  and gaining weight can be tricky.

As desperate as you may be to gain weight, you may want to take a pause and read this article as it highlights 5 ways you can gain weight in all the right places without giving up on your favorite crop tops.

Here are what you’ll find in this article:

Let’s dive in.

Why You Are Not Gaining Weight

Knowing the cause of a problem is a first step to knowing the solution.

When it comes to the reasons why weight gain is difficult or almost impossible for some people, the first that comes to mind is fast metabolism. Tagging along is stress.

But there are more than two reasons why you are not gaining weight no matter how much you eat and these reasons differ from person to person.

From my research, here are some reasons you are not adding weight:

  • Fast Metabolism

Skinny girls with fast metabolism find it hard to put on weight because their bodies actively burn and utilize the calories from the food they eat.

This is because their bodies quickly process the nutrients in their food, and use up more energy, even during sleep.

Therefore, they likely do not have enough fat storage as their bodies are always burning out calories and using more energy.

  • Underlying Ailment

Some ailment, both diagnosed and not, can be the reason for your inability to gain weight.

Ailments such hyperthyroidism, type 1 diabetes, STIs, and Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome.

These ailments can either limit the amount of food you can take in due to digestion problems, cause a rapid increase in your metabolism, or cause the malabsorption of nutrients making it difficult to gain weight.

So, it’s advisable you check with a doctor first, to understand why you are not gaining weight. If that part is checked off the box, then you could focus on other reasons to know where the problem lies.

  • Stress

For some people, stress can be the reason they put on weight, but unfortunately, you’re probably not one of those girlies if you’re reading this.

Stress can make you have a messy diet, poor sleep and even loss of appetite.

All these sum up in one way or another to stop you from gaining weight.

  • Eating Disorders

Extreme eating disorders such as anorexia limits the amount of food or calories one can consume a day, hence causing weight loss or/and inability to gain weight.

There are several eating disorders, so don’t think just because you’re certain it’s not anorexia then this cannot be the reason you’re not adding weight.

There is Bulimia, a condition that makes it hard for a person to keep enough calories in them to maintain a healthy weight.

So once again, check off this point only when you’ve been cleared by a medical professional.

  • Treatments & Medications

A side effect of certain drugs and treatments is weight loss, so in the time you’re using those drugs or undergoing treatment, you’ll not be able to see any increase in weight.

Drugs such as antibiotics, and treatments such as chemotherapy are typical examples in this case.

  • Mental Disorders

Yes, the state of your mental health can play a key role in your lack of weight gain.

A severely anxious or depressed person’s brain would easily use up more energy than a stable person’s brain.

And this can potentially disorient your hormones, metabolism and processing of food and sometimes trick you to think you’re eating enough, meanwhile you’re not, especially since your brain uses up most of what calorie it gets from your food, leaving your other organs starved.

  • Genetics

Sometimes, it’s nothing serious stopping you from gaining weight.

Other than the fact that you come from a long line of ancestors who had the same issue.

But while they probably didn’t see it as an issue, you are, and there is no big deal about it.

Why not change it if you can, right?

And that brings us to our next point of discussion.

5 Ways To Gain Weight In The Right Places

  • Eat Whole Foods

Avoid junking and start eating whole foods.

This is because whole foods are not only healthier, they’re nutrient dense and energy rich food, so you have a chance of increasing your calorie intake so your body never lacks.

You’ll also find probiotics in most whole foods, such as apples, carrots, unsweetened youghurt, beancake, pap and cheese.

These will help improve your gut health thereby fixing issues of malabsorption and loss or low appetite, so you can eat more and achieve your weight gain goals. See more.

  • Up Your Protein And Fat Intake

You’d want to eat a lot of protein and healthy fatty foods if you want to add weight in the right places.

Foods such as eggs, fish, meat, milk, cheese, avocado, olive oil and coconut oil should always be in your meals.

These foods are high in calories and can help build and repair your body tissues so you can add healthy weight. See more.

  • Build Muscles

Since you naturally have less body fat, the next best way to add in weight is to build your muscle mass.

Don’t worry, with all that protein you’ll add to your meal, you can make it work.

Accompanied by some exercises such as weightlifting exercises, pull-ups, squats and push-ups.

Not only will this work to build your muscles, it will also help you gain weight in the right places.

You’d want to avoid doing cardiovascular exercises such as running as it’s more calorie demanding and so can inhibit your effort to gain weight.

  • Create A Stable Sleep Routine

Good sleep cannot be overemphasized.

7-8 hours of sleep everyday helps your body to recuperate, relieves your mind from stress, helps to fight anxiety and depression, thereby helping you to maintain a stable mental health, which will in turn, improve your appetite, and reduce excessive energy expenditure.

  • Eat More But Mindfully

Because your body is using up a lot of calories, you would need to eat a lot more and frequently also to make up for used calories.

But you would want to learn the habit of eating mindfully too.

It’s essential you eat mindfully when eating more if you hope to only gain weight in the right places.
