How to Get Mentally Ready for Your Fitness Journey

Because not many know this, often when people resolve to begin their fitness journey, they’re soon overcome by the lack of results they had hoped for and so give up mid-way.
That’s why before anything, it’s important to get mentally ready for your fitness journey first.

What Is Mental Readiness in Fitness?

“I need to mentally prepare myself for it”.
We’ve all made this statement, at least twice in our lifetime, and each time we say it, we imply that we’re yet to come to terms or fully comprehend and accept what “it” is. It could be a foreseen marriage proposal, a breakup, or simply wanting to be honest with someone about something you believe to be a big deal.
The desire to want to do this, those sharp fast breaths you inhale to calm your nerves, and flicking your fingers against each other to reduce sweaty palms, all these motions are acts of mental readiness.
However, in the case of fitness, lucky you, there are no sweaty palms, or flared up nerves.
Mental readiness in fitness is simply the acceptance of who you are currently, that includes your body size, weight and your overall appearance, who you want to be (still considering similar factor as to ‘who you are’) and the 100% zeal to want to work hard until you become that person NO MATTER WHAT!
Steps to Getting Mentally Ready For Your Fitness Journey

- Be Realistic with Your Expectations
First, you need a clear vision of what you want out of your fitness journey.
You want to lose fat, get snatched or ripped? It’s entirely up to you. However, in being mentally ready for any of these, you need to accept that the timeframe to achieve them depends on your current body size and weight.
For instance, it would take more time for an overweight person to loose fat than it would someone who has low body fat and simply wants to get snatched.
Therefore, if your goal is to lose a significant amount of body fat, say 50-100 kg, a 3-month timeframe will likely not do it, and then when that happens, because you were not being real along the line of your fitness journey, chances are that you’ll give up.
You’re allowed to expect massive change, but you can’t predict when it’ll happen.
- Adopt The Virtue of Patience
Still in line with the first step.
Here’s the thing, there’ll be ups and downs throughout your fitness journey, there’ll be times you’d want to give up, there’ll be times you’ll say “screw it!” and there’ll be times you’ll think your routines are not up to the job, so you’ll opt to change them.
All these are normal experiences during a fitness journey, however, by mentally acknowledging that a time will come when you’ll feel any of these feelings, you put yourself at a higher position to keep striving instead of giving up or changing your routine when you’re only three weeks in.
- Think Long-term
Being fit is not a monthly challenge sort of thing. While challenging yourself to hit the gym three times a week for a month can be a helpful way to boost your moral and desire to be fit, sometimes, putting a timeline can be less helpful.
When you give yourself a monthly challenge, it’s easy to back out of it once the month is over. So instead of a monthly challenge, challenge yourself everyday of your lifetime to go to the gym three times every week.
- Ready, Set, Go
Now that you know all there’s is to know about metal readiness in fitness, you have nothing but yourself holding you back.
Go for it!
How Does Being Mentally Ready Impact the Success Of My Fitness Journey?
Being mentally ready for your fitness journey:
- Prepares you for what’s to come
- Reduces how many times you’ll want to give up
- Helps you to keep going even when you may not be seeing results
- Clears your vision, and expectation
Takeaway
You’ll hardly get anywhere in your fitness journey if you don’t first mentally prepare yourself for it, because in as much as the exercises are physical, the desire and pull to do them are gotten from what you see and tell yourself in your head.
